Current Research Interests
My main research interests are in educational technology, corpus linguistics, and natural language processing. Continuing from my Masters work in genre analysis, I developed software to automatically analyze texts at the sentence and discourse level for my PhD. Since then, I have been developing educational software for use by researchers, teachers, and learners in corpus linguistics, including AntConc, a freeware concordancer, AntVocabCheck, a freeware vocabulary profiler, and more recently web-based monolingual and parallel concordancers.
I also like to participate in joint projects with other researchers in the fields of science and engineering. When participating in joint projects, I act in a number of roles, sometimes serving as a technical advisor and other times as a technical writer. To date, these projects have been related to organic chemistry, mechanical engineering, and applications of machine learning techniques in computer security systems, and web search systems.
I also work with several Japanese companies in the development of commercial software applications, and as a consultant on various aspects of technical writing and presentation.
